General Overview

For centuries, humans have impacted on the biosphere by removing original vegetation cover and replacing it with either other flora or man-made structures. At the global scale, the ecologically most significant impact of this kind is deforestation.

The latter half of the 20th century witnessed unbridled proliferation in the exploitation, destruction, and loss of the world's forests, thereby disrupting the natural balance of fragile ecosystems, with potentially devastating effects on biodiversity, humanity, economies and the global system....
