PROTETTA FORESTA DEL CONGO,

LA SECONDA MAGGIORE AL MONDO DOPO L'AMAZZONIA

Greenpeace esprime soddisfazione per il decreto emanato dal presidente della Repubblica democratica del Congo, Kabila, questa settimana.

È prevista la moratoria del taglio in 40 milioni di ettari di foresta, mentre la legalità delle attuali concessioni verrà verificata da una commissione interministeriale, assistita da esperti indipendenti. Se l'analisi venisse condotta correttamente, secondo Greenpeace, almeno 20 milioni di ettari saranno salvati dal taglio.

La foresta pluviale del Congo è la seconda al mondo per dimesnioni dopo l'Amazzonia, ospita la maggiore biodiversità in Africa, incluse specie rare come l'okapi e il pavone del Congo. Anche gorilla, scimpanzè e bonobo trovano rifugio in queste meravigliose foreste, minacciate dal taglio illegale.
