PCRM Scientists Share Their Victories at Berlin ConferencePCRM scientists are in Berlin this week sharing their work with attendees at the Fifth World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences. PCRM is one of the sponsors of this major international conference.Biologist Megha Even, M.S., is presenting PCRM's development of a new insulin assay which was created without the use of animal serum or proteins. PCRM developed the assay with the help of Linco Research, Inc., of St. Louis, Missouri, and BiosPacific, an Emoryville, California, lab. Even will also present a case study based on the University of Virginia's decision to replace dogs in its surgical skills lab with human simulators. She is presenting on behalf of Rooshin B. Dalal, a medical student who worked with PCRM to institute non-animal teaching methods at UVA. PCRM Director of Toxicology and Research Chad Sandusky, Ph.D., will discuss PCRM's successful strategies to reduce animal testing in an EPA chemical screening program. PCRM ethologist Jonathan Balcombe, Ph.D., will use a poster presentation to display his findings on the stress animals undergo during the most mundane laboratory procedures. And Jarrod Bailey, Ph.D., a PCRM consultant, will present a poster on his recently published paper, "The Future of Teratology Research Is in Vitro."
