India: Poaching of tigersPoachers causing havocTiger poachting - Reported cases of poaching yearwise* 1998 - 44 1999 - 81 2000 - 53 2001 - 72 2002 - 43 2003 - 35 *Source, Wildlife Protection Society of India, Project Tiger (As reported in Hindustan Times 18/03/05) Six big cats were also reportedly killed by poachers at the Bandhavgarh National Park, in Madhya Pradesh (Central India), in a short period of eight months between April and December 2004. On the international market, a dead tiger is reportedly worth at least Indian Rs. 3 lacs (three hundred thousands - about 6000 Euros). The case of still untrace-able about 24 big cats from Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan state is yet to be solved. However, this has evoked a sharp reaction at the highest level. The Prime Minister of India, who is also the Chairman of the National Board of Wildlife, has given instructions to create a National Wildlife Crime Bureau to deal with such incidents quickly and efficiently. One of the important decisions taken was to stop further gifting/presenting wild animals to the Heads of other countries on their official visit to India, which is good news.
