Camels in India: Long Haul To Death23 August 2011Camels have always been wonderful allies of people but that does not protect them from being killed for meat. Even in India they are being dragged over long distances from Rajasthan and Gujarat to abattoirs in Hyderabad where people want to eat their 'auspicious' body parts. Raika, a camel breeding caste in Rajasthan, observes a taboo against the killing and slaughtering of camels. However, camel meat is very popular with people of Muslim background and that many be one of the reasons why the camel population fell from 756,088 in 1992 to 498,000 individuals in 2007. photo
