Illegal immigrants in the EU: Big cats? 10 August 2011 The saga of big cats prowling through European forests is continuing. In 2009 there was huge excitement in the area around the Belgian-German border about the alleged presence of a panther, and now the issue has popped up in Grossetano/Italy, where people said to have seen one of these magnificent but dangerous creatures. On the other hand: Are we really dealing with panthers, or are just some overweight cats powering human imagination too much? Or are we dealing with a summer phenomena of a bit of animal extravaganza spiking up the news (here is the report about an obliging lake monster putting in an appearance in Alaska)? However, if panthers and other big cats really manage to live in freedom in Europe, they must be pretty good at hiding their whereabouts. What a very wise move!
