International wildlife smuggle: Poachers are winning8 August 2011In spite of all laudable conservation efforts by UN agencies and national governments, the pillage of wildlife everywhere has not stopped and even seems to be gathering speed and brutality. Protection measures just do not work and even though in the meantime a few poachers have paid with their lives for their illegal activities, many species continue to remain under so much pressure that their disappearances are only a matter of time. After all, not only are hunters, poachers and trappers making very good use of the latest high tech equipment but research papers are also providing valuable help in locating rare and newly described animals. The Brazilian government is admirably protecting the remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes by keeping details about their whereabouts secret. Why can the same responsible attitude not safeguard endangered animals as well - and that everywhere in the global village?
