The Swiss Association for Animal Protection and the Association East International carried out the first investigation ever on the living conditions of "fur animals" in Chinese fur farms. The investigation, conducted during the second half of 2004 and in the month of January 2005, was carried out secretly in the People's Republic of China and documented for the first time the complete lack of minimum respect for animals, the unbearable living conditions in which they are kept and how these animals are skinned alive. With the objective of raising the awareness of policy makers about the unbearable living conditions of fur animals in China, the Animal Welfare Association LAV and the Swiss Animal Association has started a campaign aiming at improving animal welfare in Third Countries. The event, organized by the GUE/NGL Group, will represent an important step forward to reach this important objective. A Public Appeal to Commissioners Mandelson, Kyprianou and Ferrero-Waldner will be presented at the Conference asking for the effective inclusion of fur animal welfare issues in the bilateral agreements with Third Countries and, in particular, with the People's Republic of China. Please note that simultaneous translation in all languages will be provided from 15h30. Yours sincerely, Umberto Guidoni, Member of the European Parliament European Parliament Bât.
