EU: Commission adopts Communication on actionto help European fishing fleets regain economic viabilityIP/06/281 Brussels, 9 March 2006 Today the European Commission adopted a Communication on ways to improve the economic situation in the fishing industry. This paper analyses the causes of the current economic difficulties faced by a number of European fishing fleets, made worse by the recent rise in fuel prices, and outlines possible measures to address this situation. The Commission first indicates the type of rescue and restructuring aid which Member States may provide under State aid rules to help companies in difficulty to adjust their operations and re-establish themselves on a sounder economic footing. It then focuses on the longer-term measures necessary to promote the return to sustained profitability of the European fishing industry as a whole.
