Sea Shepherd: Information on Canadian Seal Slaughter

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

The Canadian government has not yet set a quota or set an opening date for the seal slaughter that has traditionally started on March 15th. The seals are threatened this year by the effects of global warming which has left the Gulf of St. Lawrence free of the ice on which the harp seals are dependent to give birth to their pups.

Because the slaughter has traditionally started on March 15th, Sea Shepherd is coordinating an International Day of Action for the Seals to protest the Canadian harp seal slaughter on that day. We have a number of rallies already planned and are also actively recruiting Protest Coordinators worldwide. If you would like to coordinate a protest, please email Connie at connie@seashepherd.org and she can help by providing you with banners, signs, and flyers and we will help to encourage individuals to attend your protest.

The Canadian Seafood Boycott continues to gain momentum and our Seal of Approval Campaign has volunteers across the country contacting seafood distributors and wholesalers to request that they sign onto the boycott. If you would like to help save the seals from the comfort of your own home and make some phone calls, contact our project coordinator at sealofapproval@seashepherd.org.

There is other encouraging news for the seals as well. The British government is preparing to ban seal products from Canada - joining Greenland, Denmark, and Italy. Also, Canada's conservative national newspaper, the National Post, ran an editorial by former Presidential speech writer Matthew Scully that eloquently eviscerated the idea that there is anything traditional or honorable about the annual Canadian seal slaughter(...)

Spring is a time of birth and renewal. With your help, we will continue to seek an end to the slaughter of seals, so that the newborns can enjoy a full, natural life - free and wild. And with your support and active participation, together we can raise the public's awareness of this issue which is the first step in affecting change.
