The Torture of Horses in Mexican Slaughterhouses

Until recently, horses abandoned by the cruel horse-racing and horse-carriage industries or by individuals were violently killed in U.S. slaughterhouses. Their meat was then exported to restaurants and markets in Europe and Asia, where some people still eat horses. Because of the efforts of animal protection advocates, horses are no longer slaughtered for human consumption in the United States. But now many of these abandoned horses are being exported across the border for slaughter in Mexico, where horse slaughter for human consumption is still legal.

Protections for animals in Mexican slaughterhouses are even weaker than those in the U.S. A recent investigation by the San Antonio Express-News of horse slaughter in Mexico documented that horses were being repeatedly stabbed in the neck until they were weak enough to be shackled and have their throats slit.

Fortunately, there is a bill that would ban the export of horses to foreign slaughterhouses (and also formally ban the slaughter of horses in the United States). The bill is called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act...
