USA: Factory farms stink to high heavenMassive pollution through animal wasteAccording to the Sierra Club, 43 percent of all US slaughter animals are raised in the confinement systems of the livestock industry. The animals are squeezed into small pens and their manure fills lagoons the size of football fields. This environmental problems brings about health risks not only for farm workers but also for people living in the area who often become prisoners in their own houses because of the stench which clins to clothes and hair. Toxic pollutants in the waste have been linked to a wide range of respiratory problems, especially in children. Disgusted neighbours have now taken "Progressive Swine Technologies" to court and a Nebraska appeals court has ordered compensation to be paid. Nine million pigs are reared every year leading to substantial ecological damages by the emissions of noxious fumes and waste seeping into soil and rivers.
