USA/Chandler may ultimately house tens of thousands of animals at any one time

PCRM: We're Ramping Up Our Fight Against Animal Testing!

July 13, 2007

Dear friend of PCRM,

As you know, PCRM has been working nonstop—with local groups and nationwide—to oppose the planned construction of a huge, new animal-testing facility in Chandler, Ariz. Covance, one of the largest animal-testing companies in the world, has been exposed for violations of the Animal Welfare Act for its inhumane treatment of monkeys, dogs, rabbits, and other animals. While animal testing in general is cruel and unnecessary, it is particularly important for us to stop the expansion of this animal-testing giant.

I want to update you on several new developments. Chandler government officials have just approved zoning changes, zoning approvals, building permits, and air quality permits for the proposed Covance construction. Covance is currently preparing the site so it can proceed with construction of this facility, which may ultimately be up to 600,000 square feet in size and house up to 1,200 workers and tens of thousands of animals at any one time.

PCRM’s legal experts are working to block this project. We filed two administrative appeals two weeks ago seeking to overturn all these approvals because Covance’s approvals were all granted in violation of state law and even violate the ordinances of the city of Chandler. In addition, last week we filed suit in Maricopa County Superior Court on the grounds that the secret dealings between Covance and the Chandler city government violate Arizona law. We will also ask the court to intervene if our administrative appeals are denied.

These legal actions require an enormous amount of resources, but we have no choice if we aim to save the lives of the countless animals who will die if the laboratory is built.

Please make a donation now to stop Covance and stop animal cruelty. We need your continued support if we are to have a chance of succeeding.

We will continue to update you on this crisis that could happen in any city across the country.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Neal Barnard, M.D.
