EU: Commission reaction to REACH agreementThe European Commission very much welcomes the agreement achieved on 30 November in the negotiations between the Finnish Presidency, acting for the Council, and the European Parliament, represented by Mr Florenz, Chairman for the Environment Committee, and Mr Sacconi, Rapporteur, with a view to adopting REACH at the second reading. At this meeting, the Commission, represented by Vice-President Günter Verheugen and Commissioner Stavros Dimas, indicated its support for the compromise package which emerged. It is a marked improvement of the present situation regarding health and environment. At the same time, it safeguards the competitiveness of the European industry, paying particular attention to the situation of SMEs, and encourages innovation. While it is a matter for the Parliament and Council to make a final decision on the package, the Commission believes that it will allow the Union to move forward with implementing a major policy initiative to the benefit of its citizens.
