Blue Voice: Japan and Greenland to hunt humpbacks

At the most recent meeting of the International Whaling Commission at St. Kitts Japan made a concerted effort to overturn the worldwide ban on whaling that has been in place nearly twenty years. The also reiterated their plans to hunt humpback whales.

The whales Japan is setting out to hunt are individually known along the coasts they visit each winter. Humpbacks that visit French Polynesia, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa are under the gun. Scientists have identified them individually and millions of tourists have marveled at them. Small eco-friendly businesses depend on them. Now these whales are threatened with a hideously cruel death by harpoon.

This is an outrage without parallel in Japan’s defiance of world opinion. The nation that allows the unspeakable slaughter of thousands of dolphins, that has helped reduce whale populations to tiny fractions of their former numbers, will now hunt humpback whales...

=======
All creatures on earth feel like we feel, endeavour for happiness like we do. They love, suffer and die like we do. All beings in distress have equal rights for protection.

Not to cause our humble brothers pain is our commitment to the animals. But to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission to serve them whenever they need us.
– St. Francis
