Struan Stevenson drops labelling bill

by Scotland for Animals

13 April 2011

Scotland for Animals have just learned from Struan Stevenson MEP that he has dropped plans to table an legal amendment for compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat in Europe.

Struan cites as the reason for this that he has learned that almost 80% of animals killed in halal slaughter in the UK are stunned. He is now adding his name to the amendment only to label meat that has not been stunned prior to slaughter which will effectively retain the status quo by legally allowing around 80% of halal meat to slip under the net unlabelled. All kosher meat will be labelled which is a good thing however with the absolutely tiny amount of kosher meat actually on sale in the UK and Europe this will mean that almost all ritually slaughtered meat will be unlabelled even if the law passes.

SfA are naturally disappointed by Mr Stevenson's decision but even more disappointed by the animal organisations who have supported bodies who perform halal slaughter by endorsing their false claims that animals are properly stunned throughout....
