PÉTITION « NOURRIR LA POPULATION VS NOURRIR LES ANIMAUX »18/08/2008PÉTITION AU : Secrétaire général des Nations Unies, Ban Ki-moon COPIE : FAO – Directeur général, Jacques Diouf OMS – Directrice générale,Dre Margaret Chan Lancée par : -Jens Holm, membre suédois du Parlement européen -Association Suisse pour le végétarisme -European Vegetarian and Animal News Alliance (EVANA) « NOURRIR LA POPULATION VS NOURRIR LES ANIMAUX » Cher Monsieur le secrétaire général, En 1996, la «Déclaration de Rome sur la sécurité alimentaire» réaffirmait le «droit de chaque être humain d'avoir accès à une nourriture saine et nutritive». Les signataires ont également engagé leur volonté politique afin «afin d'éradiquer la faim dans tous les pays». En 2008, non seulement la malnutrition et la famine sont-elles en croissance dans plusieurs parties du monde, mais elles devraient atteindre de nouveaux sommets de souffrances. Des récoltes qui diminuent, des prix qui grimpent en flèche et des pratiques agricoles insoutenables ne sont que quelques-uns des facteurs qui posent des risques mettant la vie en danger pour des personnes vulnérables. Alors que la faim et la malnutrition tuent près de six millions d’enfants chaque année, il est inacceptable que d’énormes pourcentages de récoltes disponibles servent à nourrir des animaux de ferme. Au nom de l’humanité, une collectivité mondiale responsable ne peut plus se permettre de consacrer de 7 à 16 kilos de grains ou de fèves de soja, jusqu’à 15 500 litres d’eau et 323 m2 de pâturages à la production d’un seul kilo de boeuf pour ceux qui ont les moyens d’en acheter. Nous avons désespérément besoin de méthodes plus accessibles et plus durables afin de produire des aliments pour tous. Malheureusement, même si les experts de FAO considèrent que « l’élevage aussi est une menace pour l’environnement », ils se contentent de recommander des techniques agricoles différentes, dont certaines entraînent le risque d’endommager un environnement déjà vulnérable, peut-être de façon irréparable. Tous les gens affamés, plusieurs millions de végétariens et ceux qui recherchent des solutions de rechange saines aux traditions destructives ont le droit de s’attendre de la part des décideurs, des gouvernements et des organes internationaux, une enquête scientifique sur toutes les options disponibles, y compris le végétarisme. Cette ressource et ce style de vie salutaires méritent qu’on leur consacre des recherches non biaisées et des efforts de promotion, car ils offrent la possibilité de trancher la question « aliments pour la population vs aliments pour les animaux » en faveur de l’humanité. Pour cette raison, nous en appelons aux Nations Unies et à des agences de cesser de négliger le végétarisme et d’étudier plutôt ses avantages aux volets multiples, dans le but de les incorporer dans de futures stratégies pour un monde sans faim.
