Russia Intervenes in Canada’s WTO Challenge to the EU Seal Product Trade BanCommercial sealing is increasingly unjustified
November 6, 2012
MONTREAL — Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of Humane Society International/Canada, issued the following statement in response to a decision by a World Trade Organization Panel to approve Russia’s request to intervene as a third party in the dispute brought by Canada against the European Union Regulation prohibiting trade in products from commercial seal hunts:
“In the past ten years alone, more than two million seals younger than three months of age have been clubbed and shot to death for their fur in Canada. Most Canadians want this inherently inhumane killing ended, and support the rights of sovereign nations to prohibit seal products trade. Yet our government is investing millions of our tax dollars to challenge the European Union Regulation at the World Trade Organization.
The first, second and sixth largest economic powers in the world—the European Union, United States and Russia--have measures prohibiting trade in products from commercial seal hunts, and they are all parties to this WTO challenge. The Canadian government stands increasingly alone in its promotion of commercial sealing and its view that nations should not be permitted to end trade in products their citizens find morally unacceptable.”
