USA: Endangered whales could be deafened or killed

The Department of the Interior is considering a plan that would allow seismic testing along the Middle and South Atlantic. Tens of thousands of dolphins and whales will be affected, including critically endangered north Atlantic right whales.

The high-intensity pulses produced by seismic air guns can exceed 235 decibels--almost twice as loud as an airplane taking off! These pulses carry for thousands of miles and can cause whales and other marine species that use echolocation to become disoriented and even cause deafness or serious injury...
