Sweden: Shooting wolves to save the wolf population?

Jens Holm:

Jens Holm: "The government continues to accommodate hunters’ demands"

24 February 2011

After the European Commission had urged "Sweden to respect nature legislation in protecting endangered wolves" and Jens Holm of the Left Party initiated an emergency debate in the Riksdag, Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren defended the licensed wolf hunt on Feb 8.

He explained that the authorization for 7000 hunters to chase 20 wolves was given in the interest of saving the wolf population from inbreeding.

In a fierce attack against Carlgren Jens Holm protested: "Scientists will of course say that more wolves are needed. Why do you start by shooting wolves? Nothing has been done to strengthen the genetic status. However, the hunt is on again!"
