Thousands of European race horses retire to the ...abattoir
7 February 2011
What to do with a race horse that doesn't race? Showing some gratitude by letting the animal live out a natural life? Much too expensive! After all, the horse has done his duty, the horse can go: Off to the butcher. Should in some European countries be any squeamishness about killing and eating these magnificent creatures - no problem. In France and Belgium a nice bit of horse meat is so much appreciated (specialty: suckling foals!) that some French abattoirs have already specialised in 'processing' UK horses.
