South Africa Resumes "Canned Hunting"January 12, 2011The South African Supreme Court of Appeal has decided to uphold "canned hunting", a controversial practice which allows for animals to be bred in captivity before being released into enclosed areas which hunters can pay to enter. Animal welfare advocates aimed to require a 24-month period in the wild before lions could be targeted. However, supporters of canned hunting managed to block this provision and allow the practice - which brings in around $450 million a year - to resume without change.
