USA: Cows Not Happy

July 21, 2010

No matter how well cows are treated on dairy farms, they are killed when they are no longer an economic asset. For most dairy cows, this happens when their milk production drops and they are considered "spent," usually when they're about four or five years old. But 34,442 dairy cows will be slaughtered just to restrict the milk supply so that milk prices go up. This decision comes from the National Milk Producers Federation, whose "herd retirements" killed 200,761 cows last year.

Was it not enough for farmers to dump milk on the ground? It now has to be blood?...
