Fondation Brigitte Bardot: Fur soon to be prohibited in Israel?

5 June 2009

A bill aiming at prohibiting the importation, production and sale of any fur in Israel was recently filed in the Knesset and will be put to the vote by the House Deputies.

Supporting this text, Brigitte Bardot wrote to Nitzan Horowitz, author of the proposal, to congratulate and thank him:

“This bill represents a major step forward, an example to the world which needs to respect and recognize animals as sensitive beings.

As we all know, the fur industry condemns million of animals to be locked and piled up in cages, then tortured before being gassed or electrocuted, it is a shameful and indignant industry!

I have a deep respect and a sincere admiration for your personal fight against any form of discrimination, any violence perpetrated on those suffering despite their race or species.

The political powers governing our world seem deprived of all humanity and empathy, we would need a Nitzan Horowitz in each country to try to restore the balance, but alas that is a far way off.

The Supreme Court of Israel has already prohibited the tube-feeding or gorging of palmipedes (swimming birds such as geese and ducks) justly stating that “agricultural interests should not be automatically more important than the interest to protect animals”. Today, your project raises a new hope for all those protesting against animal exploitation and the cruelty that it involves.

I would like that this spirit of progress extends to the conditions of animals sacrificed for consumption, because they are deeply shocking and still more disturbing when it is a question of cutting the animal’s throat whilst still conscious and suffering. I think in particular of cows whose bleeding can last nearly 10 minutes. Ten long minutes during which the animal shouts its pain, is agitated in its box and finds sometimes the force raise itself, after having its throat cut, to try to escape as has been documented in some abattoirs. It is impossible to remain indifferent toward these daily horrors when it would suffice to “stun” the animal beforehand to avoid its suffering during the slaughter.

We all, as a whole, have a moral duty to respect living creatures which are being exploited by humans. We do not have the right nor must we agree to submit millions of animals to pain and terror which cannot be justified. It is ethicaly, humanly and intellectually impossible. ”
