The environmental impact of industrial animal agriculture

One of the major findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report is the identification of changes in lifestyle and behaviour as a means for mitigation of climate change. Individuals can contribute significantly to reductions of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, because as consumers they can not only provide powerful messages to those responsible for supply of goods and services, but also impact significantly on emissions caused by their own households.

One area of contributions is from the types of food that people consume. In this respect a reduction of meat consumption can have substantial benefits in reducing GHGs...
