Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from carsMeet the world's top destroyer of the environment. It is not the car, or the plane,or even George Bush: it is the cow.10 December 2006 A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.... === Bravo, FAO! Finally your scientists found the courage to admit the disastrous consequences of out-of-control meat consumption!! Better late than never because the facts have been on the table for a long time. Already In 1993 Jeremy Rifkind published his book 'Beyond Beef: The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture' which the L.A. Weekly commented as follows: "Highly readable … Impressive … With heartbreaking particularity, Rifkin shows how raising cattle is turning the planet into desert. . . . There is no doubt that he builds a case." Hopefully it won't take another 13 years until FAO starts to incorporate its own findings into official strategies.
