Open Letter to Michael Flatley

sent by Helen Stevens (South Devon Greyhound Action)

Dear Mr Flatley

I have been a very proud fan of yours for many years. I had the pleasure of seeing the Lord of the dance in London at the Carling Apollo Hammersmith on the 3rd of October 2003. I have purchased over the years Riverdance and Lord of the dance CD's and DVD's and saw Riverdance last year for my 40th birthday in Cardiff. I have also purchased Lord of the dance merchandise ie keyrings and T shirts etc and most recently I have been bought by my partner as an Easter gift your latest Celtic Tiger DVD and recent book of which I have now returned to the company it was bought from and my partner has had a full refund.

You may be wondering why I have done this after being such an avid fan.

I have always had much respect for your hard work and determination as I am in business myself and often one needs these attributes to be successful. Therefore, I can relate to how you once said in an interview on the Television with Melvyn Bragg that you were told off at school for looking out of the classroom window and not paying attention because you were daydreaming about being a dancer of which you have certainly made that dream come true, however, all the respect I had for you has now gone out of that window as when I picked up your book to read it.

I was totally shocked, appalled and astounded that you had written on the front page that you like to live on the edge and that you were a deep sea fisherman and a big game hunter.

I could not believe that a man who perfoms miracles on stage could on the other hand be brutalising and murdering innocent creatures of which I consider all life to be a miracle. How can you do this?

As I am totally appalled at this, I can no longer support you.

I was so disappointed that I had to return your goods but could not read the book or watch the DVD without knowing who you truly are. I would be going against my own nature if I tried to pretend that you were a decent guy, just so I could watch and enjoy your latest dance.

No doubt it will not worry you that you have lost a fan as there are millions more of them I am sure, however, a bad reputation will eventually catch up with you and I am a great believer in what goes around comes around. There are many more people who will disapprove than approve of your hunting lifestyle as we know the majority of people in the UK are against cruelty to animals, so this will be deeply frowned upon and you will lose support.

I fail to see the argument for hunting as it is cruel and barbaric and has no place in the 21st century.

You may perform miracles on stage Mr Flatley but you take them away with every animal you murder with your sadistic macho hunting lifestyle. Think about that next time you go on stage.

The soul knows what you are doing is wrong. Those people who think it is manly to hunt are only bullies and cowards as they pick on innocent creatures for their kicks. These creatures cannot defend themselves which is why you are a bully. I can only assume that there must be a lack of love and compassion in your life as if you had an ounce of it you would not be murdering animals that have as much right to walk the planet as you do.

Shame on you Mr Flatley!!

Next time you look in the mirror I hope you see a true reflection of yourself and change your ways and become a decent honourable human being that is man enough to show kindness and compassion towards your fellow creatures. It will be only then that I will regain my respect for you as you will show you have the courage to change your ways.

Here is a famous quote from a great man, perhaps you could learn a very valuable lesson here!!
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
"To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being."
Mahatma Gandhi, statesman and philosopher

One very disappointed EX fan.
